THE WELKIN by Lucy Kirkwood // AHAD HA'AM Theatre // Premiere: May. 2023
One woman’s fate rests in the hands of twelve.
In rural England, 1759, as the entire country awaits a comet set to cross the sky, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for a gruesome murder. When she claims she is pregnant, a "jury of matrons"—twelve local women—are plucked from their daily chores to decide whether she is telling the truth or simply trying to escape the gallows. Only the midwife, Lizzy Luke, is prepared to defend her. While a bloodthirsty mob batters at the doors, the women struggle with the weight of their responsibility and the "devil" lurking among them.
A powerful new British play echoing 12 Angry Men and The Crucible, offering a refreshing and innovative perspective on the female experience from then until today.
