ROMEO AND JULIET by William Shakespeare // GESHER Theatre // Premiere: Feb. 2022
We all wish we could be Romeo and Juliet, the heroes in the greatest love story ever told.
And in a way, we were all Romeo and Juliet, when we fell in love for the very first time.
In our production we returned to the essence of this classic play, throwing ourselves wholeheartedly into the joys and sorrows of first love.
We brought the story to our own reality where money and power leave the young generation with a shaky present and an aimless future. The rivalry between the two families is at its core a class conflict and an opposite worldview. Juliet comes from the House of Capulet, a wealthy family who wishes to sustain their status and reputation at all costs. Hopes and dreams have no place in this home.
Romeo, comes from the streets, the house of "Montague" - a gang of friends who function as a chosen family. In his world being loyal to your friends is more important than any passing infatuation. Mercutio, the gang leader, is an alley-cat, a cynic who mocks Romeo's ardor, but in fact hides his own romantic love for his friend. Romeo, an unappreciated romantic and an amateur poet, dreams of a beautiful love worth writing about.
In this dull reality, everyone dreams of Shakespearean romance, of a masquerade ball, where you can become another, a hero in the classic Shakespearean style. To fall in love like children who refuse to take off their costumes at the end of the party... to get stuck in a beautiful reality, to extend the holiday.... Just like Romeo and Juliet.
The meeting of Romeo and Juliet is not just the meeting of two children in love, but the meeting of two lost souls who finally find each other. They share the same bravery to live life to the fullest. In death they do not part, but rather reunite forever. If only life could have offered them the same future... Perhaps it would have been different.
